The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the return of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 to flight after reviewing and accepting the SpaceX-led investigation into the Sept. 28 mishap. On Sept. 30, the FAA had grounded the vehicle, requiring SpaceX to investigate why the second stage malfunctioned, causing the booster to fall outside the approved safety zone in the Pacific Ocean.
The FAA also closed investigations into Falcon 9 mishaps during Starlink missions in July and August. Falcon 9 will launch Monday for the European Space Agency’s Hera spacecraft. Meanwhile, the FAA may approve SpaceX’s Starship 5 test flight license this month. SpaceX’s CEO Elon Musk has criticized the FAA for delays, calling for Administrator Mike Whitaker’s resignation and threatening legal action.
