Over 150 female inmates were raped and burned to death during a prison escape in Goma, DRC, as male prisoners set fire to the facility. A UN spokesperson reported that most of the 165 women raped by fleeing prisoners perished in the blaze. The attack occurred amid clashes between Congolese forces and M23 rebels. Government officials condemned the atrocity, while reports emerged of additional sexual violence by the DRC army. Over 4,000 detainees escaped, leaving the prison in ruins. M23 rebels, who claim to have seized Goma, have called for an immediate ceasefire.
