On Friday afternoon, a farewell flyover of six to eight F16 fighter jets will soar over military airfields in Soesterberg, Breda, Eindhoven, and The Hague as the Royal Netherlands Air Force retires the Cold War-era aircraft.
While 24 of the jets are headed to Ukraine, others will be repurposed for training abroad.
First developed in the 1970s as an air defense aircraft, the American-made single-engine jet also functions as a bomber. Its modular design allowed for upgrades, but it lacks features like stealth technology, which the F-35s, introduced by the Dutch air force in 2013, possess.
