The Israeli army has requested the removal of the cross from the grave of a Christian soldier who died in Gaza. Citing a ruling by the IDF Chief Rabbi, the Defense Ministry stated that the presence of the cross “harms the holiness” of the Jewish cemetery.

The Ministry emphasized that it is not permitted by law to place a cross or any other non-Jewish religious marker on military headstones, particularly in the Haifa military cemetery where Jewish soldiers are also buried. This decision follows the rabbi’s interpretation regarding the sanctity of Jewish burial grounds.
