In August, SpaceX launched the Tanager-1, a methane-detecting satellite developed by the nonprofit CarbonMapper. It’s the second methane satellite launched this year, following one from the Environmental Defense Fund in March.

Tanager-1, no bigger than a mini-fridge, can pinpoint methane emissions within 50 meters, allowing CarbonMapper to target polluters like oil wells, landfills, and livestock operations. CarbonMapper aims to launch a fleet of 10+ satellites, achieving 90% global coverage.
