Ukraine Enacts Law Banning Russian-Linked Religious Groups

Ukraine is intensifying its efforts to sever ties with Russia by targeting religious institutions influenced by Moscow. On Saturday, Ukraine’s Independence Day, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law that bans religious organizations with connections to Russia. The primary focus of this legislation is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which has historically maintained ties with the Russian Orthodox Church, also known as the Moscow Patriarchate.

In his nightly address, Zelensky highlighted the significance of the law, stating that “Ukrainian orthodoxy today is taking a step toward liberation from the devils of Moscow.”
