As Ukraine strengthens its defense capabilities, acquiring advanced offensive weapons like the AGM-158A JASSM cruise missiles is crucial. Equally important, however, are cutting-edge communication systems such as Link 16, which plays a pivotal role in coordinating military operations. Widely used by NATO, Link 16 enables the rapid, accurate exchange of targeting and combat data, critical for air and missile defense missions.
Yet, the U.S. hesitates to provide this technology to Ukraine, fearing it might fall into Russian hands. This reluctance significantly limits the effectiveness of the F-16 fighter jets that Ukraine will soon receive from allies like Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway. General Christopher Cavoli, NATO’s top commander in Europe, emphasizes the necessity of Link 16 for Ukraine’s defense operations.
While the system features encrypted communications, there are concerns that no system is entirely immune to compromise.
