People in a southern suburb of Beirut watched as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah delivered a televised speech on August 25, 2024. This came just days after some of the heaviest cross-border exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel in years.
US officials are cautiously optimistic that the immediate threat of a wider conflict between the two sides has lessened, though they remain vigilant, particularly regarding any potential actions from Iran against Israeli targets.
According to current and former US officials, Hezbollah—widely regarded as Iran’s most powerful and independent proxy in the region—appears unwilling to engage in a full-scale war with Israel at this time. Despite ongoing, relatively contained exchanges of fire across the border, Hezbollah’s recent response to the Israeli assassination of one of its top commanders, Fu’ad Shukr, was seen as measured.
Analysts note that Hezbollah’s choice to target military sites suggests an effort to maintain proportionality and avoid escalating the situation further.
