The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s helicopter destroyer JS Kaga (DDH-184) has arrived in San Diego under dense fog, signaling the beginning of F-35B Lightning II training operations alongside the U.S. Navy. The Kaga will undergo testing to optimize operations of the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B fighter, with evaluations continuing until November 18, 2024. This is the ship’s first deployment since being modified to accommodate F-35Bs, which included a redesigned bow similar to U.S. amphibious assault ships.
While not officially termed an aircraft carrier due to Japan’s pacifist constitution, the Kaga’s upgrades bolster its air capabilities in the contested East China Sea, provoking criticism from China.
