Police in New Zealand are urgently trying to trace sweets containing “potentially lethal levels of methamphetamine” after they were distributed by a charity in Auckland. The anti-poverty charity, Auckland City Mission, said up to 400 people may have received the sweets as part of a food parcel.
The sweets were anonymously donated by a member of the public in a sealed retail package. At least three people, including a child, sought medical attention afterward, though none are currently in the hospital.
“We did not know that the lollies contained methamphetamine when they were distributed,” a spokesperson for the charity told the BBC.
According to the New Zealand Drug Foundation, each individual sweet could have a street value of around NZ$1000 ($601; £468).
Police have indicated that while the incident could be accidental rather than a targeted operation, no conclusions have been drawn as it is “a bit early to say.
