New research based on data from a retired NASA mission has uncovered evidence of an underground reservoir of water deep beneath the surface of Mars. A team of scientists estimates that there is enough water trapped in tiny cracks and pores within the Martian crust to fill oceans on the planet’s surface. The study suggests that this groundwater could cover the entire surface of Mars to a depth of 1 mile (1.6 kilometers).
The data was obtained from NASA’s InSight lander, which used a seismometer to study the interior of Mars from 2018 to 2022. Future astronauts would face significant challenges accessing this water, as it is located between 7 and 12 miles (11.5 and 20 kilometers) beneath the surface.
Published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study reveals new insights into the geological history of Mars and suggests a potential new site for searching for life on the red planet if the water could ever be accessed.
