Britain Closes Last Coal Plant, Ending 142 Years of Coal Power | CISNewsStudio1s

Britain’s last coal-fired power plant, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, will close at midnight, marking the end of 142 years of coal-generated electricity in the country that pioneered the Industrial Revolution. The station, which has operated for over 50 years, will undergo a two-year decommissioning process, with many of its 170 employees remaining for the transition.

The UK government celebrated the closure as a step toward achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030, making Britain the first G7 nation to phase out coal.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks called it the “end of an era,” acknowledging the contributions of coal workers. The world’s first coal plant opened in London in 1882.
