Thousands of hotel workers in the U.S. have launched a multi-day strike in several cities, including San Francisco, San Jose, Boston, Seattle, and Greenwich, Connecticut, as contract negotiations with major hotel operators like Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, and Hyatt Hotels have stalled.

The strike, led by the Unite Here union, affects over 4,000 workers and could expand to other cities, including Baltimore, Honolulu, Kauai, New Haven, Oakland, Providence, and San Diego, as the Labor Day holiday weekend continues.

Unite Here, which represents workers in hotels, casinos, and airports across the U.S. and Canada, stated that additional strikes could begin at any moment if agreements on wages and the reversal of pandemic-era job cuts are not reached. The strike comes as the hospitality industry experiences a surge in travel, with AAA reporting a 9% increase in domestic bookings compared to last year.

Hyatt expressed disappointment over the union’s decision to strike but emphasized its commitment to negotiating fair contracts and recognizing the contributions of its employees. The company also noted that it has contingency plans in place to reduce the impact on hotel operations during the strike.
