China and Russia have announced plans to construct a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2035 as part of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). Designed to power long-term missions near the Moon’s south pole, the ILRS will involve over a dozen international partners and compete with NASA’s Artemis Program. China’s Chang’e-8 mission will lay the groundwork in 2028. The base aims to support both autonomous research and future human presence. It also reflects China’s growing leadership in space exploration, especially after its historic 2024 mission that returned samples from the Moon’s far side. The ILRS will also explore lunar resources like regolith and helium-3, drawing participation from 50 countries and thousands of researchers worldwide.
