As NATO allies met to assess U.S. policy on European security and Ukraine, Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė warned that EU defence capabilities are falling behind Russia’s rapid military expansion. She stressed the urgency of strengthening European defences, highlighting the €500 billion gap in spending needed to sustain support for Ukraine while ensuring the EU’s own security. Meanwhile, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth deemed Ukraine’s NATO membership and pre-2014 border restoration “unrealistic,” ruling out U.S. troop involvement in peacekeeping efforts.
