Vice President Kamala Harris has largely refrained from directly confronting former President Donald Trump on his racially charged policy proposals, even as she struggles to gain traction among Hispanic and Black voters who could be most affected by Trump’s plans.
Harris has avoided addressing Trump’s ideas, such as mass deportation of undocumented migrants and pushing local governments towards stricter policing tactics. This cautious strategy may stem from a reluctance within some Democratic circles to engage with the contentious topics of immigration and crime. However, this approach might also limit her ability to reclaim support from Black and Hispanic voters, among whom Trump appears to be performing better than he did in 2020, according to most polls.
