The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has laid off approximately 800 employees, with additional cuts possible by Friday. The move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reduce government agencies, potentially affecting over 1,000 jobs. Most NOAA divisions, including weather, climate, and environmental research, were impacted.
Probationary employees, those with less than a year on the job, were among the first to be dismissed. Some critical forecasting roles, such as hurricane and severe storm prediction, may have been exempt. The layoffs come as China increases its investment in climate research.
