A strike on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant could trigger a catastrophic release of radioactivity, warned International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi at the UN Security Council. Bushehr holds thousands of kilograms of nuclear material and serves as Iran’s main operational nuclear power plant. Its southern location places it closer to key US allies than Tehran. Grossi stressed that a direct hit or loss of power could cause a reactor core meltdown, risking widespread radiation exposure. The region’s governments have voiced concerns. Iran’s nuclear program, developed since the 1960s, remains a major geopolitical flashpoint.
