Senate Republicans have thwarted the passage of a crucial aid bill for Ukraine, demanding border compromises that were not met. The $110 billion (£87.3 billion) package, encompassing $61 billion for Ukraine along with allocations for Israel and aid for Gaza, faced a roadblock as Republicans insisted on linking Ukrainian aid to broader US immigration and asylum reforms.
In a vote that fell short of the required 60 votes, Senators voted 51 to 49 against advancing the bill. This setback injects uncertainty into the future of vital aid for Ukraine and compels lawmakers back to the negotiation table, with the clock ticking as Congress approaches its scheduled winter break in just a matter of days. The White House has issued warnings about the potential depletion of US funds for Ukraine if an agreement is not reached promptly.
