In a stunning Australian Open upset, 19-year-old American Learner Tien defeated last year’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev in a grueling five-set thriller that ended just before 3 a.m. in Melbourne. Tien, playing in his first Grand Slam second round, showed resilience after missing a match point in the third set.
Medvedev forced a decider, but Tien held his nerve, winning six of the last seven points in a 10-point tiebreak to claim the biggest victory of his career. The California native is now the youngest American in the third round since Pete Sampras in 1989.
