Donald Trump’s landslide victory over Vice President Kamala Harris has made his autocratic ambitions more feasible, and as he returns to the White House in January, he may face few checks on his authority. In his first term, Trump removed numerous institutional guardrails, a process he continued with legal tactics out of office.
Despite this, it’s uncertain if his vast power will lead him to bypass constitutional limits. However, his record suggests a desire to remove constraints, evident in his suppression of dissent within the GOP, pushing out those who reject his “Make America Great Again” platform. With the GOP now controlling the Senate and close to taking the House, Trump’s reach could grow.
Additionally, Trump re-enters office supported by a Supreme Court ruling offering significant immunity for official acts: a result of his defense against a federal indictment. Although limited, Trump may interpret this ruling broadly, aided by a conservative majority many see as favorable to future power expansions.
