The U.S. military has reportedly carried out a strike on Iran using a one-way attack drone modeled after Tehran’s Shahed platform, marking its first confirmed combat use of such systems. United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said American-made low-cost drones delivered retaliation, signaling a strategic shift toward expendable swarm-style warfare. The operation involved Task Force Scorpion and the LUCAS drone, a reverse-engineered variant of Iran’s Shahed-136. Deployed from vessels including the USS Santa Barbara, the platform costs a fraction of high-end systems like the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper. Analysts say the move reflects lessons from modern conflicts, where low-cost, high-volume drone assaults have reshaped battlefield dynamics.
