The United States and Iran have begun a second round of high-level nuclear talks in Rome, hosted at Oman’s embassy. These follow earlier discussions in Muscat that both sides called “constructive.” The negotiations come amid rising tensions and international concern, as the UN’s nuclear watchdog recently warned Iran is “not far” from developing a nuclear weapon. Iran continues to enrich uranium at 60% purity, far above the 2015 deal’s limit. US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi are leading the discussions, focusing on reviving the nuclear deal and lifting sanctions. Iran insists its nuclear ambitions remain peaceful and civilian-focused, while resisting calls to halt uranium enrichment entirely.
