Japan’s next-generation fighter jet programme, the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), is gaining momentum as Europe’s rival Future Combat Air System (FCAS) faces indefinite delays. Germany, France, and Spain have paused FCAS development due to political disagreements, industrial disputes, and timeline failures. Analysts suggest Germany and other partners may now consider joining the Japan-UK-Italy GCAP, also known as the Tempest programme. With rising security threats in Eastern Europe and global air dominance becoming a priority, GCAP is emerging as a viable sixth-generation fighter alternative. The shift highlights changing defence alliances, aerospace competition, and the future of military aviation.
