A cargo ship carrying nearly 3,000 vehicles, including over 800 electric and hybrid models, was abandoned in the Pacific Ocean after a fire erupted off Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. The Morning Midas, built in 2006 and registered in Liberia, remains adrift 300 miles southwest of Adak Island. All 22 crew members were safely rescued. Satellite imagery shows thick smoke still rising days after the blaze began. Lithium-ion batteries may be the source, complicating firefighting efforts. Salvage crews are en route, while environmental concerns grow over potential chemical leaks or structural collapse. The incident echoes a deadly 2023 EV cargo ship fire, sparking calls for stricter maritime EV safety protocols.
