Israel plans to activate its “Iron Beam” laser defense system within a year, introducing a new era of warfare as it battles missile and drone threats from Iran and regional partners. The high-power laser system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the architect of Israel’s Iron Dome, is designed to intercept and destroy incoming projectiles such as drones, rockets, mortars, and ballistic missiles.
The Jewish state has invested over $500 million to expand production, collaborating with Rafael and Elbit Systems. According to Defense Ministry Director General Eyal Zamir, the ground-based laser will have initial operational capability within one year. Israel first showcased a prototype of the Iron Beam in 2021, working since then to make it functional. This advancement comes amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon and increasing direct confrontations with Iran. Since the October 7 Hamas attack, Israel has engaged in warfare with Iran-backed forces across Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq. Iran and its allies have attempted to overwhelm Israel’s Iron Dome with a range of projectiles.
