Australia has sealed a $6.5 billion deal to purchase 11 advanced Mogami-class frigates from Japan, marking a major shift in Pacific maritime strength. These upgraded stealth warships, built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, boast 32 Mk 41 vertical launch cells capable of firing 128 air defense missiles and potentially Tomahawk cruise missiles. With greater firepower, an 11,500-mile range, and a lean crew of just 90, the vessels will enhance Australia’s naval capabilities against regional threats, particularly China, while strengthening Japan’s role as a leading defense exporter and deepening cooperation within the US-led Quad alliance.
