Mexico is set to impose import tariffs of up to 50 per cent on a broad range of Asian goods starting January 1, closing a major trade route used by exporters to bypass US tariffs. The new measures will affect electronics, vehicles, steel, textiles and chemicals, and are expected to disrupt supply chains across Asia. Analysts say the move is aimed at curbing transshipment into the US and appeasing Washington ahead of the USMCA review. Countries without free-trade agreements with Mexico, including China and India, will face higher costs, while CPTPP members may remain exempt. The policy could transform North America into a tightly guarded trade bloc.
