Pakistan’s decision to acquire China’s fifth-generation FC-31 “Gyrfalcon” stealth fighter is set to give the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) a strategic advantage over India for the next 12 to 14 years, according to retired Air Commodore Zia Ul Haque Shamshi. India is not expected to develop its own fifth-generation fighter capabilities within this time frame, putting Pakistan ahead in aerial warfare technology.

The FC-31, developed by China’s Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, is Pakistan’s latest step towards modernizing its fleet. Reports suggest Pakistani pilots are already training on the jet in China.

The FC-31, China’s second stealth fighter after the J-20, could replace Pakistan’s aging F-16 and Mirage 5 jets, enhancing its tactical flexibility and airspace penetration capabilities.

India, still relying on 4.5-generation fighters like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Rafale, now faces an air power gap against both China and Pakistan.

The FC-31 features advanced stealth capabilities, dual internal bays for missiles, and a competitive cost structure. Its deployment on Chinese aircraft carriers and growing export potential mark its strategic significance in regional power dynamics.
