Sweden’s brown bear population faces a significant threat as about 20% of the animals could be killed in the upcoming hunting season.
Licenses have been issued for the culling of 486 brown bears, a decision that has sparked outcry from conservation groups. Official figures released in 2023 estimate that there are currently around 2,450 brown bears roaming the Swedish countryside, a number that has already been decreasing due to increased licensed hunting in recent years.
With the rapid decline of the bear population since 2022, the actual number of bears could be even lower than the estimate.
