Trump’s focus on the economy as a key campaign message isn’t surprising. Polls consistently indicate that the economy is the top concern for American voters. A recent poll by The Economist and YouGov listed “inflation/prices” and “jobs and the economy” among the top concerns for voters.
More importantly, these polls show that voters are deeply unhappy with the current state of affairs. This creates a favorable situation for any presidential challenger.
However, in an election reshaped by Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate, Trump is struggling to convey his economic message effectively. Less than a month ago, at the Republican National Convention, Trump appeared unbeatable, having survived an assassination attempt and leading in the polls. Now, he has lost that lead and seems to have lost his direction.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris is generating a wave of excitement and enthusiasm that Trump is finding hard to counter. To undermine her momentum, Trump could remind voters of their dissatisfaction with high prices and blame Harris for the inflation that has increased the cost of living during her time with President Biden in the White House.
