Ukraine has intensified its long-range campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, marking a major escalation with its first strike on a Russian offshore oil platform in the Caspian Sea. According to Ukraine’s security services, the attack on Lukoil’s Filanovsky platform signals Kyiv’s widening list of targets as it seeks to disrupt the energy revenues sustaining Russia’s war effort. Since early 2024, and especially from August onward, Ukraine has increased strikes on refineries, export routes, pipelines, tankers, and now offshore facilities. November recorded the highest number of attacks yet. With Russia pushing forward on several fronts and global oil markets buffered by surplus supply, Western support for Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” strategy has grown. Analysts say the goal is clear: restrict Moscow’s critical energy income that feeds its recruitment and war operations.
