The United Nations has called for de-escalation as Israeli forces continue their raids in the occupied West Bank for the second consecutive day. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced a “counter-terrorism operation” on Wednesday, reporting that 12 people were killed in the cities of Jenin and Tulkarm by Thursday.
However, the Palestinian health ministry reported a higher toll, stating that 16 people had died since the operation began. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel to halt its actions, warning that it was “fuelling an already explosive situation.” He called on Israeli forces to “exercise maximum restraint and use lethal force only when strictly unavoidable.”
The IDF claimed that five people were killed in Tulkarm after “exchanges of fire” with militants hiding inside a mosque, and seven others died in Jenin.
