Venezuela has passed a new law criminalizing the seizure of oil tankers and other actions that disrupt its trade and commerce. The legislation follows the recent seizure of two Venezuelan oil tankers by U.S. forces in international waters. Under the new law, individuals or entities involved in promoting, financing, or carrying out acts of piracy, blockades, or illegal international actions against Venezuelan businesses may face fines and prison sentences of up to 20 years. The bill also directs the government to provide economic and commercial protections for national and foreign companies operating in Venezuela. China and Russia criticized the U.S. action at an emergency UN meeting. The law awaits final approval from President Nicolás Maduro.
