Georgian parliamentary speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced on Facebook that he signed into law a controversial ‘family values’ bill restricting LGBT rights, just weeks before the country’s October 26 parliamentary elections.
The Georgian Dream party passed the bill, which bans gender transitions and could prohibit pride marches and the display of the LGBT rainbow flag, citing the need to protect the Orthodox Church from foreign influence.
President Salome Zourabichvili, an opponent of the bill, refused to sign it, but Georgian Dream had enough parliamentary support to override her veto. LGBT activists claim the bill is a move to rally conservative voters ahead of the election, where the ruling party seeks a fourth term.
Western nations have criticized the legislation, suggesting it signals a shift towards authoritarianism and alignment with Russia, away from Georgia’s pro-Western stance since the Soviet Union’s collapse.
