Iran has strongly objected to the European Union’s backing of the United Arab Emirates’ claim over three islands in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. These islands, Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa: have been under Iranian control since 1971 but have been disputed by the UAE for decades.

Tehran summoned Hungary’s ambassador, representing the current EU presidency, to protest a joint EU-GCC statement calling for Iran to relinquish control, calling the statement “baseless” and “irresponsible.”

Meanwhile, the EU imposed new sanctions on Iran over its missile and drone transfers to Russia, exacerbating tensions. Iran recently appointed an ambassador to the UAE for the first time in eight years, signaling a tentative improvement in relations with Gulf states.
