Gaza remains under threat of continued devastation, despite ongoing peace talks. Months of intense negotiations across various cities have inched Israel and Hamas closer to a ceasefire agreement. However, even if a deal is struck—which is still uncertain—it may only last a few weeks before collapsing and the Gaza conflict reigniting.
As senior negotiators prepare for a crucial meeting in Cairo this weekend, several sticking points remain unresolved in the potential three-phase agreement. Israel has made it clear that after the initial six-week phase, any pause in fighting could be temporary, with no commitment to a permanent ceasefire.
“I am ready to do a partial deal, it is no secret, that will bring back some of the people,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in late June on Israel’s Channel 14. “But we are committed to continuing the war after the pause to achieve the goal of destroying Hamas. I will not give up on this.”
Israel’s stance has not changed, and this approach—allowing Israel and Hamas to resume conflict after the first phase—represents a significant breakthrough for Israel in the negotiations. The Palestinian militant group has conceded, despite its push for a temporary pause to lead to a permanent ceasefire.
Riki Baruch, the sister-in-law of a deceased Israeli hostage who met with Netanyahu this week, told CNN that her key takeaway from the meeting was “the Prime Minister’s promise to defeat Hamas, and to continue fighting until the last of the hostages returns.”
