Russians have expressed worry and anger to the BBC over the Ukrainian incursion. For nearly two weeks, Ukrainian forces have been seizing and occupying Russian territory. This cross-border attack into the Kursk region marks the first time since World War Two that a foreign army has fought inside Russia. This dramatic and unexpected development comes nearly two-and-a-half years after President Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin has vowed to “force the enemy” out of Russia. President Putin has avoided publicly using the word “invasion” to describe the Ukrainian offensive, seemingly to downplay the situation and avoid panic.
But how are the Russian people reacting? A visit to Aleksin, a small leafy town in the Tula region, about 100 miles (160km) south of Moscow, reveals the local sentiment. Despite its proximity to the capital, Aleksin feels worlds apart. During a visit, a patriotic pop concert was taking place in the town square, where many people expressed alarm at the events happening further south.
